Biography
My name is Rebecca Rowell, and I am a photographer and paper artist based in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
My creative journey began at a young age when my family encouraged me to draw from still life and observe the world around me. That passion continued throughout my education and eventually led me to complete a Fine Art degree, specialising in Photography.
Photography became my greatest passion. I love being outdoors, travelling, and capturing the beauty and emotion I encounter through my camera. Over the years I have exhibited my work, met inspiring people, and gained experiences that have shaped both my creativity and the way I see the world.
I enjoy working with a variety of equipment, from my phone and tablet when inspiration strikes unexpectedly to DSLR cameras for larger projects. For me, the most important part of photography isn't the camera itself—it's being present in the moment and allowing creativity to flow naturally.
Light has always been at the heart of my photography. I am fascinated by the way it transforms a landscape, a building or a fleeting moment, revealing details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Through my work, I use light as a symbol of hope, new beginnings and the quiet presence of the divine. Through my images, I seek to take you, the viewer, on a journey of truth and light, encouraging moments of reflection and inviting you to see familiar places with fresh eyes.
Alongside photography, I have developed a passion for contemporary layered paper art. Every piece begins with an original design inspired by nature, architecture, coastal landscapes, fantasy, or the people and places that have influenced my life. I carefully balance positive and negative space to create artwork that is both delicate and structurally strong.
Each design is meticulously hand-cut from high-quality paper using precision hand tools. Every cut requires patience, focus and attention to detail, gradually revealing intricate patterns that create depth, movement and a lace-like quality. I find great satisfaction in transforming a single sheet of paper into a sculptural work of art.
Many of my pieces are presented within illuminated frames using transparent backgrounds, allowing light itself to become part of the artwork. As daylight changes or the frame is illuminated, new colours, shadows and layers emerge, creating a constantly evolving experience.
Whether I am working with photography or paper, my desire is the same—to celebrate beauty, craftsmanship and the wonder of creation. I hope my work encourages people to slow down, look more closely, and discover hope, light and new beginnings in the world around them.
Approach & Inspiration
"I work primarily with natural light, believing that the quality of light defines the soul of an image. My approach is patient and observational — I wait for the moment when light, composition, and subject align perfectly."
